The Port Townsend High School Food Bank Garden began donating produce to the food bank in 2012. Since then, this location, with much more space than the Mountain View Garden, has helped the Food Bank Farm and Gardens contribute thousands of pounds of fresh local produce to the people of Jefferson County.

This garden is also committed to working with, and teaching students to grow their own food. In 2014 the high school featured some of this local produce in their school salad bar. In 2015 and 2016 this garden expanded – and so did student participation!

The Port Townsend High School Garden continues to grow thanks to the support of community volunteers and local farms.  The spring of 2017 has been wet and cold, so the garden is just beginning to produce its first crop of lettuce and radishes.  The garden is maintained by ninth grade Health students, who are in the garden every Friday through the growing season.  Students have been working to build compost piles, maintain our worm bins, and prepare beds for planting, We have been learning about composting, transplanting, cover cropping, crop rotation, tool repair, as well as plant reproduction and seed production.  Upcoming summer projects include expanding our herb garden and working to compost more of the school district’s food waste.

The High School Garden is seeking volunteers to continue the work begun by students during the school year.  Work will include weeding, watering, transplanting, and harvesting for the food bank and school district.  Volunteers will be needed on summer Fridays from 10am-2pm, beginning June 16.  The garden is located at 1610 Blaine St, Port Townsend, on the west side of the Gael Stuart Building.

Volunteers are encouraged to take fresh vegetables home with them.  There will not be volunteering on Friday, June 23.
